How I’ve Learned to Control “Ragey”, My Inner B**ch

October 10, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Meet Ragey.

She’s my inner bitch and every now and then she takes over my entire mind, body and soul. She makes my shoulders touch my ears, she clenches my teeth and makes my nostrils flare. She’s red hot furry, edginess and completely unreliable. One of her worst attributes? She shows up for no freakin’ reason whatsoever.

She struts into my body in her red stilettos, pencil skirt and briefcase and typically announces (in a British accent for some reason) “Ain’t no one getting out of this day alive. Stand back, people, Ragey’s here and she’s about to make this day a living HELL for everyone”. Ragey is a ball-busting cow bound and determined to shoot darts of irritation poison throughout every cell of my body.

She makes me cringe when people crunch their salad too loud. She makes me glare at my kids for laughing at silly things (that I would typically laugh about right alongside them). She puts thoughts into my head like “Yup, that just happened. Any other time you’d let this slide, but not today, my friend…NOT. TODAY!”.

Ragey is a jerk. But she comes out every now and then when I’m exhausted OR when I’m PMSing. In fact, Ragey is the ragiest when I’m PMSing. It’s best if people just stay away. I’ve found that as I get older my PMS is getting worse and worse. Maybe my patience is just dwindling, but in this last year of my 30’s, this whole PMS thing has gotten a little out of control.

So, when Ragey shows up there are a few things I do to dissipate her red-stiletto, pencil-skirt, ball-busting, coil-me-so-tight-I’ll-jump-down-your-throat-for-asking-me-if-I-want-decaf-coffee-DO I WANT DECAF?!!- NO I DO NOT WANT DECAF-WHAT KIND OF MONSTER ARE YOU?!-attitude.

Phew. FYI…she likes when I write about her, apparently.

I’m hoping you can relate to this crazy person I’ve called Ragey. I believe she is certifiable. And, although she only shows up one a month, it’s enough to make a lasting impression.

So, when I notice my shoulders start to rise or I seem to hear an almond being crunched from another room on another level of my house, I take precautions to save myself and let’s be honest, every single person around me, from the fury and ridiculousness that Ragey can create.

Isolate or Explode

If possible, when Ragey takes over your body, it’s best to remove yourself from all people. My husband knows the signs and often encourages me to take some alone time or go read upstairs. I think he even knows that if nuts are in the house while Ragey is poking around my body, it’s best that they’re eaten under a pillow, in the house next door.

Bitchy Babe Essential Oils

I’m a firm believer in the power of essential oils and Ragey seems to respond well to the great blend of Soulful Sister’s Bitchy Babe. It’s an essential oil combination of geranium, bergamot, grapefruit and ylang-ylang. My diffuser is on full blast in every room during Ragey’s reign and it honestly does help soothe and calm my rattled nerves.

Drink All The Water & Eat The Healthy Stuff

In times of distress, PMS or overwhelm there is a tendency to forget important self-care/nourishment practices like drinking water and eating well. Too often during times of stress, we reach for high-calorie/low-nutrient comfort food, wine or whatever crutch you have. It is almost critical that during these times under Ragey’s control when she’s demanding cheese, crackers, chocolate and wine, you need to take control and suggest to her veggies, chicken and water. Do NOT worry, she’s usually open to this and will surprise you with gratitude once you’ve hoovered it down.

Sweat Her Out

Here’s the thing with Ragey: she typically melts away if you get her hot enough. How do you do that? You workout. Hard. Aggressively. You sweat her out. Don’t listen to her…you DO have time to get your workout in and you WILL feel so much better once you’re done. If you’re not an aggressive fitness person, that’s okay…Ragey melts with most any physical activity: walking, hiking, biking, dance parties…anything that gets your body moving and your heart pumping will help get rid of her.

Exercise is magic, medicine and can help you overcome the dark blanket of fury your inner Ragey seems to carry around with her.

Take Time For You

Sometimes all your Ragey needs is a little time, a little acknowledgment that she’s there and a little self-care. Everybody wants attention, even Ragey. So, acknowledge her, treat yourself to something that makes you happy and try to soothe your stress, anxiety, worry and rage away. Sometimes if you just take a moment to take a breath, you’ll realize what’s happening and you’ll be able to refocus your energy on something more useful.

So, there you have it. You’re not alone in those moments of quiet rage when you wonder where these moods actually come from. I used to think I was the only one with a “Ragey”, but I’m not. I’ve talked to many women over the past few months who’ve told me about their inner Ragey and how she comes out every month. And honestly, as we get older, she seems to be getting stronger, more finicky and less patient.

We need to learn to cope and dissipate Ragey as quickly as possible. She is a part of you and although you’re most likely not proud of her, she’s there. It’s time to acknowledge her, accept her, forgive her and then get rid of her ask quickly as possible.

Let’s try to dampen her spirits and take care of our true selves. We got this.

Time to Workout: Repeat What You Love

October 6, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

It’s time to get sweaty and get to work, methinks!

Here’s a quick 20-minute workout you can do at home, at the gym, in your backyard, at the park…wherever your little heart desires. Why? Because! No equipment other than your own body is required and you can take this workout with you anywhere you go!

The Workout:

Complete each Block 5 times, then move onto the next block of exercises.

How the blocks work: Complete the first three exercises for 10 seconds and the fourth exercise for 20 seconds. Rest for 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times. That should equal 5 minutes of work. Take a little break to grab a drink of water and wipe the sweat from your brown, then move to the next block of exercises.

Boom!

Here’s a QUICK VIDEO for you to watch to make sure you know what all the exercises are.

If you prefer to have someone take you through the workout so you don’t have to watch your timer, grab your phone and your headphones and plug in the Dig Deep with Dr. Lindsay Gee podcast where I coach you through the entire workout.

Have a great workout, y’all! Let me know how it goes, I’d love to hear from you.

Don’t forget: you’re amazing and strong and unstoppable.

Now, get to work! Off you go!

011 – Workout Episode – Repeat What You Love

October 6, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

It’s time for a little love, don’t you think?! For this workout, I’ve created four blocks of exercises filled with some of the exercises I love the most. Burpees, punching, kicking, oh my! I love it all.

During our 20-minute (22, if I’m being truthful, because there are breaks in there) workout together, I’ll “talk” (aka yell, coach, motivate…whatever word you choose to use to describe the sweet, sweet sound of my voice) a cardio and muscular endurance session that will leave you sweating, laughing (I hope) and feeling strong.

Grab your headphones, water bottle and sweat towel and let’s get to work. No additional equipment is required for this workout, just your body and your drive to work hard. I’ll provide the motivation, music, cueing and hilarity (not really, but some of you like to laugh when you workout, so let’s just pretend I’m sometimes funny, ok?!).

As always, we’re lucky enough to have permission to use mixes from steadymixes.com. Woop! Woop! Today’s choice is their October 2017 130 for 60 mix and it is AWESOME. Seriously, I love this mix.

Before you start, watch this QUICK VIDEO so you know the moves I’m talkin’ you through. Otherwise, you’re just listening to my voice and flailing around. And while I may think that to be super funny, I figure you want to get a good workout and do the exercises safely and properly.

Now…get to work! Have a good workout. Off you go!

DAMMIT! I Forgot Fitness is Supposed to be Fun, Not Punishment

September 28, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Fitness has always been a part of my life. My Mom was an aerobics instructor and honestly, my first memories of my entire life are of picking out her leotard and legwarmers and going to classes with her. For the most part, fitness has also been a very fun and social thing for me. I’m a big fan of group exercise (obviously, I started a wicked company that revolves around it, yay Hot Mama!). I love the people. I love the energy. I love the swearing. I truly love group ex.

Recently though, my workouts have become a grind. Like a “I really don’t wanna go in there and get on that treadmill and push, push, push myself. I hate it in there. Ugh” type of grind.

Here’s the thing, I was working out to lose weight, not to have fun. Yeah, I know. Me, the Founder of a fitness company that is successful because we make fitness fun, loving and supportive. Me, who battles against that F**KING scale and creates events to smash the aforementioned scales with sledgehammers. Yeah Me. I’ve been working out to lose weight. Because well, I’m uncomfortable in my skin right now and that’s not an awesome feeling.

I have Hashimoto’s disease. It’s an autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid. Basically, my thyroid doesn’t work at all and I take thyroid meds to manage it. It’s seriously not a big deal, but my medications never seem to even out and balance. This summer I became severely hypothyroid and couldn’t get on top of it. Weight gain and fatigue had me feeling self-conscious, embarrassed and oh-so-tired.

But, every morning I would get on my treadmill and hammer out some intervals. I would sweat and swear and couldn’t figure out for the life of me why I kept gaining weight. I would push myself and my workouts to a point where I started hating my body for not responding like it is supposed to. Stupid thyroid.   [Read more…] about DAMMIT! Monster Kids After School? Make ‘Em Run!

September 26, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Have you ever had those days when your kids are so energy-filled you’re unsure what to even do with them? It seems the more energy they have, the louder and more obnoxious they get! My kids are 7 & 8 (almost 9) and with school being back in session, I find that they have physical energy to spare at the end of the day.

I wish I had the energy they have. They’re amazing little beasts that enter my house, fill it with crazy kid-energy (the best energy, let’s be honest), destroy anything in their path and need attention, attention, attention. Meanwhile, I’ve been grinding it out at work and am exhausted. So, my patience is short and their loud, crazy antics aren’t filled with the hilarity they think they are.

I found myself getting frustrated with the sheer volume of their energy, snapping at them to “CALM DOWN!” and “SETTLE DOWN”, when really…why the HECK should they? They’ve just had an awesome day at school and want to tell me about it. They may want to shout it at me while backflipping around the house throwing confetti and crashing symbols because, well, life is exciting. And me…I just want quiet.  [Read more…] about Monster Kids After School? Make ‘Em Run!
