Healthy Chili Recipe! Turkey, Sweet Potato & Butternut Squash Chili

January 18, 2018 By Lindsay Gee

If you’re tired of the same ‘ol, same ‘ol chili, you’ve GOT to give this veggie and protein-packed healthy chili recipe a try! It’s delicious and super good for you. I just throw everything into my slow cooker and walk away for the day, but if you have an hour, you can absolutely cook this on your stovetop as well!

Enjoy! Let me know how you like it! It’s hearty, it’s delicious and it’s seriously packed with nutritious goodness. What more could you ask for in a chili? Hmmmm?

Oh! And something cool that I’ve found?! In the recipe, it calls for hot sauce, and you can use any hot sauce you love. BUT, there is this super cool company called Fuego Box and they do monthly or quarterly hot sauce subscriptions! Each box comes with three totally different hot sauces to try and it can totally change the flavor of your recipes (in a good way!)! So, if you’re a hot sauce connoisseur, or even just want to try something new, I’d totally recommend checking them out! The sauces are delicious AND it’s fun to try all the different flavors! Also…keep these in mind as a gift for those hard-to-buy-for people in your life!

The recipe:

The Funny Thing About Growing an Empire

December 19, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

As most of you know, I’m the proud Founder of a company called Hot Mama Health & Fitness. We “build community through family fitness”…meaning we support, empower, inspire and motivate parents to get active and be healthy role models while also providing a space for Mamas to go to get safe and loving support for the ups and downs of Motherhood.

My days are filled with spreadsheets, writing, timelines, troubleshooting, supporting, developing, digging, worrying, pushing, inspiring and sweat. Because yes, I still find the time to workout. I still work from my home office, so I do all of this with my kids interrupting me on the daily (hourly?). And, even when I’m “done work for the day”…it’s literally 5 steps away. (I really cannot wait to get an office outside the home!)

But, here’s the thing: Every now and then, I look up and I look back. Every now and then I need to remind myself that all the effort, the sweat, the frustration, the doubt, the worry and the fear are all worth it. And, it usually comes around this time of year.

Here’s the funny thing about growing an empire: people you don’t know love what you do even if they don’t know that you’re the one doing it. Now, I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense, so bear with me, I’ll give you a few examples of what I’m talking about…

I started Hot Mama out of my garage…you need to know that so that when I tell you the rest, it might help you understand where I’m coming from. So okay, there I am 5.5 years ago inviting women into my house to destroy it (because…well…kids) while I make them sweat in my garage. All good. Fast forward 5.5 years and here we are…30 franchises strong, 1000’s of women in the Hot Mama community, more asking to join and programs I’ve developed and designed changing lives on the daily.

That’s not the funny part.

Here’s the funny part. Me…walking in a mall past a gorgeous Mama that I don’t know and she’s wearing a Hot Mama hoodie. Me…driving in a city I’ve never been to behind a car that has a “You’re following a Hot Mama” bumper sticker. Me…seeing photos on Facebook of my Hot Mama logo getting placed onto Christmas ornaments and Mamas LOVING it. Me…reading post after post about how our Hot Mama programs have changed and improved lives and inspired families to get active, together. Me…walking into a restaurant and someone asking if I’m the “OHM” and asking for a photo.

RANT: “Exercise Schmexercise”? You’ve GOT to be Kidding!

November 9, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Hold onto your hats, Mamas…I’m about to unleash…

I just read a post from a woman who lost 50lbs. Awesome! I LOVE that. She was unhealthy and needed to lose weight and did it all through eating properly. She didn’t eat after dinner, she stopped drinking and she changed some other habits. Bingo bango…love it. But, it went sideways for me when she then wrote “Exercise shmexercise…who has time for that?”. And that, my lovely readers, is when my head actually popped off my head, rolled around my office floor and sat there hyperventilating for a few minutes.

Okay. Okay…okay, okay, okay.

I AGREE: nutrition is a HUGE part of weight loss. Like, 80% important. I concede. Yup. You got me there. Point for you. You win.

But exercise isn’t just about losing weight! Most trainers don’t focus on exercise as a tool to lose weight, at least they shouldn’t.  Exercise is a way to make your body healthy. For me, exercise isn’t a weight-loss tool,  it’s a prescription for healthy living.

Stop thinking of exercise solely as a tool to lose weight. It can absolutely be used to augment your weight loss journey if you go through a program designed for weight loss (hello HIIT and strength training workouts). You bet, it’ll aid in your weight loss, 100%. But your nutrition is most important when it comes to weight loss.

But exercise shmexercise? No. No, no no, no, no, no, NO!

GAH!

I read and I read and I read about how us trainers guilt you into feeling bad about not exercising. I read articles on how we should stop shaming you all for not getting your asses off the couch and moving your body. And yes, while I don’t feel like you should be shamed, I think you need to reflect on your life, what you prioritize and THEN tell me you don’t have time for fitness. I’m not shaming you. I’m educating you. I’m empowering you. I’m trying to get through all your excuses about why you can’t exercise and remind you of the reasons why you can and should!

Here’s a just a quick list of the benefits of exercise:

  1. Reduces body fat (nope, not talking about weight, I’m talking about actual fat that makes the systems in your body work more efficiently).
  2. Boosts your immune system.
  3. Lowers blood pressure.
  4. Decreases stress.
  5. Known prescription for depression and anxiety disorders.
  6.  Strengthens bones.
  7. Improves complexion.
  8. Improves memory.
  9. Maintains mobility.
  10. Strengthens your heart.
  11. Reduces diabetes risk.
  12. Clears arteries.
  13. Manages chronic pain.
  14. Oxygenates your body.
  15. Strengthens muscles.
  16. Improves memory.
  17. Boosts your mood.
  18. Helps with mental focus.
  19. Increases metabolism and increases energy.
  20. Improves your quality of sleep.

And that took me under 2 minutes to write. I could go on and on and on. So don’t tell me exercise isn’t important. Don’t stand in front of a person dedicating her life to creating a movement of family fitness, of empowering women to get active so their kids are active and tell me exercise isn’t important. Don’t you exercise schmexercise me. That’s bullshit. I’m not shaming you. I’m trying to get through to you.

What’s it going to take? You want research articles on the importance of exercise? Fine:

Exercise & Depression

Heart Health

Brain Health

Parental Influence on Children’s Physical Activity Levels

Benefits of Aerobic Fitness on Stress, Sleep & Fatigue on Postpartum Women

Exercise and Postpartum Depression

Take your shakes and your pills and lose the weight. Go ahead. It’ll just come back. But…off you go. It’s not about a quick fix when it comes to exercise. Exercise isn’t just about weight loss. Exercise is about moving your body to help you LIVE. LIVE. Not just survive. LIVE. Feel better. Work better. Have more energy. Love yourself.

Exercise Shmexercise? No. Stop looking at fitness as just a weight loss tool. How many times have I written that in this post?! Exercise and physical activity have the power to change your health, your mood, the life of those around you…the life YOU LEAD. Exercise and being physically fit WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. Not because you’re losing weight, but because your body is getting healthy. Exercise does that.

So stop telling me you don’t have time. Stop telling me I’m shaming you because you use time as an excuse. Stop telling me you only need food to be healthy. Stop it.

I’m not listening. Just like a lot of you won’t listen to me now. But, just as you continue to give me excuses, I will continue to educate, push and force you to listen to my message. Until you get it. Because YOU are important. Not your weight. YOU. Your LIFE. Your HEALTH. YOUR WELL-BEING.

Rant over.

How I’ve Learned to Control “Ragey”, My Inner B**ch

October 10, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Meet Ragey.

She’s my inner bitch and every now and then she takes over my entire mind, body and soul. She makes my shoulders touch my ears, she clenches my teeth and makes my nostrils flare. She’s red hot furry, edginess and completely unreliable. One of her worst attributes? She shows up for no freakin’ reason whatsoever.

She struts into my body in her red stilettos, pencil skirt and briefcase and typically announces (in a British accent for some reason) “Ain’t no one getting out of this day alive. Stand back, people, Ragey’s here and she’s about to make this day a living HELL for everyone”. Ragey is a ball-busting cow bound and determined to shoot darts of irritation poison throughout every cell of my body.

She makes me cringe when people crunch their salad too loud. She makes me glare at my kids for laughing at silly things (that I would typically laugh about right alongside them). She puts thoughts into my head like “Yup, that just happened. Any other time you’d let this slide, but not today, my friend…NOT. TODAY!”.

Ragey is a jerk. But she comes out every now and then when I’m exhausted OR when I’m PMSing. In fact, Ragey is the ragiest when I’m PMSing. It’s best if people just stay away. I’ve found that as I get older my PMS is getting worse and worse. Maybe my patience is just dwindling, but in this last year of my 30’s, this whole PMS thing has gotten a little out of control.

So, when Ragey shows up there are a few things I do to dissipate her red-stiletto, pencil-skirt, ball-busting, coil-me-so-tight-I’ll-jump-down-your-throat-for-asking-me-if-I-want-decaf-coffee-DO I WANT DECAF?!!- NO I DO NOT WANT DECAF-WHAT KIND OF MONSTER ARE YOU?!-attitude.

Phew. FYI…she likes when I write about her, apparently.

I’m hoping you can relate to this crazy person I’ve called Ragey. I believe she is certifiable. And, although she only shows up one a month, it’s enough to make a lasting impression.

So, when I notice my shoulders start to rise or I seem to hear an almond being crunched from another room on another level of my house, I take precautions to save myself and let’s be honest, every single person around me, from the fury and ridiculousness that Ragey can create.

Isolate or Explode

If possible, when Ragey takes over your body, it’s best to remove yourself from all people. My husband knows the signs and often encourages me to take some alone time or go read upstairs. I think he even knows that if nuts are in the house while Ragey is poking around my body, it’s best that they’re eaten under a pillow, in the house next door.

Bitchy Babe Essential Oils

I’m a firm believer in the power of essential oils and Ragey seems to respond well to the great blend of Soulful Sister’s Bitchy Babe. It’s an essential oil combination of geranium, bergamot, grapefruit and ylang-ylang. My diffuser is on full blast in every room during Ragey’s reign and it honestly does help soothe and calm my rattled nerves.

Drink All The Water & Eat The Healthy Stuff

In times of distress, PMS or overwhelm there is a tendency to forget important self-care/nourishment practices like drinking water and eating well. Too often during times of stress, we reach for high-calorie/low-nutrient comfort food, wine or whatever crutch you have. It is almost critical that during these times under Ragey’s control when she’s demanding cheese, crackers, chocolate and wine, you need to take control and suggest to her veggies, chicken and water. Do NOT worry, she’s usually open to this and will surprise you with gratitude once you’ve hoovered it down.

Sweat Her Out

Here’s the thing with Ragey: she typically melts away if you get her hot enough. How do you do that? You workout. Hard. Aggressively. You sweat her out. Don’t listen to her…you DO have time to get your workout in and you WILL feel so much better once you’re done. If you’re not an aggressive fitness person, that’s okay…Ragey melts with most any physical activity: walking, hiking, biking, dance parties…anything that gets your body moving and your heart pumping will help get rid of her.

Exercise is magic, medicine and can help you overcome the dark blanket of fury your inner Ragey seems to carry around with her.

Take Time For You

Sometimes all your Ragey needs is a little time, a little acknowledgment that she’s there and a little self-care. Everybody wants attention, even Ragey. So, acknowledge her, treat yourself to something that makes you happy and try to soothe your stress, anxiety, worry and rage away. Sometimes if you just take a moment to take a breath, you’ll realize what’s happening and you’ll be able to refocus your energy on something more useful.

So, there you have it. You’re not alone in those moments of quiet rage when you wonder where these moods actually come from. I used to think I was the only one with a “Ragey”, but I’m not. I’ve talked to many women over the past few months who’ve told me about their inner Ragey and how she comes out every month. And honestly, as we get older, she seems to be getting stronger, more finicky and less patient.

We need to learn to cope and dissipate Ragey as quickly as possible. She is a part of you and although you’re most likely not proud of her, she’s there. It’s time to acknowledge her, accept her, forgive her and then get rid of her ask quickly as possible.

Let’s try to dampen her spirits and take care of our true selves. We got this.

Monster Kids After School? Make ‘Em Run!

September 26, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Have you ever had those days when your kids are so energy-filled you’re unsure what to even do with them? It seems the more energy they have, the louder and more obnoxious they get! My kids are 7 & 8 (almost 9) and with school being back in session, I find that they have physical energy to spare at the end of the day.

I wish I had the energy they have. They’re amazing little beasts that enter my house, fill it with crazy kid-energy (the best energy, let’s be honest), destroy anything in their path and need attention, attention, attention. Meanwhile, I’ve been grinding it out at work and am exhausted. So, my patience is short and their loud, crazy antics aren’t filled with the hilarity they think they are.

I found myself getting frustrated with the sheer volume of their energy, snapping at them to “CALM DOWN!” and “SETTLE DOWN”, when really…why the HECK should they? They’ve just had an awesome day at school and want to tell me about it. They may want to shout it at me while backflipping around the house throwing confetti and crashing symbols because, well, life is exciting. And me…I just want quiet.  [Read more…] about Monster Kids After School? Make ‘Em Run!
