Wanna Bash a Scale With Me?

March 30, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

If you haven’t heard of the latest fitness program I’ve been working on, it’s time for you to listen and listen up good. It’s called Screw Skinny and we launched this 8-week “Strength & Empower” program in February of this year. To say feedback was positive would be a massive understatement!

*Insert happy dance here*.

Women who have gone through the 8-week in-person Screw Skinny program have had remarkable things to say about learning to reflect on who they are and how strong their bodies are. These women have taken weekly workout and what we call “Love Yourself More” exercises and have started to learn to take the time to love themselves and praise their bodies.

I’ve combined my knowledge of fitness (yup, PhD in Exercise Physiology over here) with my desire to help women reflect on themselves, their journey and the strength and power their bodies possess…and I created Hot Mama’s Screw Skinny Strength & Empower program. This ain’t your typical fitness program. Not even close. This is ground-breaking fitness programming and I am beyond excited about it.

The idea came to me in the middle of the night last summer (as most good ideas do) and I’ve been working tirelessly to perfect the program and change women’s lives through fitness, support, love and laughter. We created a #ScrewSkinny video this January and we’re currently wrapping up our first ever session of the 8-week Screw Skinny journey with over 100 Hot Mamas.

The best part? We decided to celebrate the completion of the first ever session of Screw Skinny with some scale bashing events! Oh yeah, baby…we are bashin’ scales up in here. Literally! I hope you’ll join me at these events over the next few days! I’m going to teach a master class for a few of them and then I’m going to pass you a sledgehammer and you can bash your scale.

It’s time to ditch your scale, Mamas. Step off it. Bring it to me. And take a sledgehammer to it. You don’t need it any longer. Your strength,  your power…your WORTH is not based on a number. You are so much more than a number…it’s time you took the time to learn and appreciate you…in all your glory.

It’s Time to Revive Your New Year’s Resolution!

February 2, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

It’s February. Dare I ask how those New Year’s Resolutions are going? As you donned your superhero cape on January 1st and stood with your hands on your hips, chest out, face the sky, soul filled with motivation shouting to the world about how you were going to 1) Eat better, 2) Get fit, 3) Drink less, 4) Sleep more…I quietly lifted my wine glass, wished you well…and wrote this post.

The reality is that by the first week of February between 55 – 68% of people who set a New Year’s Resolution have already kicked it to the curb where it now rocks itself to sleep, sucking its thumb. Poor thing. Did you kick your resolution to the curb? Are you a resolution-kicker?! *Gasp!*

If so, that’s okay. Did you know that by the end of the year only about 8% of people actually follow through with their resolution? Dismal isn’t it?

But hey! Hey, you! It’s not too late. We’re only 4 weeks into the year. Although January felt like it took 6 months and the weird energy of the world affected a lot of us (thanks, Trump), it’s time to rally and get back on track with your goals.

If you’ve struggled to keep your New Year’s Resolution, or if you didn’t set resolutions and just made goals for yourself for the year, let’s get going and focus on smashing that 92% “failure” rate. Yes? Okay…here’s how:

1) Revisit your resolutions/goals.

I hate to state the obvious, but I will. You need to remember what the heck you decided to achieve this year. A lot of times we get so bogged down with living day to day and just getting through the day, we forget what we decided to accomplish. So, pull out that sheet of paper, that book, that napkin, whatever you wrote your goals on and read them again. Refresh that busy memory of yours. What were your initial resolutiosn/goals?

2) Reset.

Reading your initial goals, do they still speak to you? Knowing what you know now, one month later, about how this year is unfolding, do your goals still make sense to you? Do they light you up and motivate you? Inspire you? If they don’t, it’s time to reset your goals and write down new and improved goals that you feel you can and want to accomplish over the next 11 months.

3) Refocus.

Now that you have some goals written down that inspire you to be successful, you need to refocus. Figure out why you weren’t able to stay the course with your previous resolution/goals and change something. What didn’t work? What was the hurdle? Did you just forget? Did your schedule not work? Figure out what wasn’t working and come up with a plan to ensure that you can be successful. Do you need to plan better, schedule dedicated time, find a friend to drag with you? What will help you focus on your goal and be successful? Focus and plan for your success.

4) Recommit.

New or improved resolution/goal? Check. New plan? Check. New determination? Let’s get there. Commit to your new plan. Reread your goals. Look at your plan of attack and commit to it. Tell someone about it if you need accountability help. Reach out for help and support if you need it. You can find support in a lot of areas, so if support is what you need to commit to your goals…reach out. Set mini-goals for yourself to celebrate and commit to dance parties when you reach them. Recommit to you and your goals. I know, for certain, you’re worth it.

5) Rock it!

Okay party people…writing down new goals, refocusing, recommiting, well that’s the easy part, isn’t it? But, your success will be based on your actions. So, your goals better have some fun aspects that you’re excited about because it’s time for you to rock your resolutions/goals. It’s time to put your cape back on, strike your superhero pose, take a deep breath, believe in yourself…and GET TO WORK! It’s time to rock your resolutions!

Go on…go and rock it! Follow the five steps above and you can, absolutely, be successful. You got this! Reach out if you need help. I’m here…cheering you on. Always.

Words Matter. #SCREWSKINNY

January 30, 2017 By Lindsay Gee

Welcome to Screw Skinny. Screw Skinny is not about body shaming, it’s not about putting others down, it’s about embracing our bodies no matter the shape, size, weight, wiggly-ness, jiggly-ness. It’s about choosing to love the areas that used to make us cringe, or even…despise. It’s about acknowledging that our bodies are amazing, strong, capable and that the numbers on the scale DO NOT define us.

Screw Skinny is about banning the word “skinny”. In a world full of unachievable images and messages of bodies to strive for, I don’t want my daughter growing up to be a word. Screw Skinny is about flipping the bird at the word and at the scale and not only accepting our bodies the way they are, but embracing, loving and celebrating them.

You are NOT defined by the numbers on the scale. You get to define you, your strength, your power, your health, your fitness. YOU. Nothing and nobody else.

We’ve definitely started some conversations with people who think we are shaming thin people. Trust me when I tell you we are NOT. It’s the opposite. We want you to love your body no matter what. Thin, curvy, voluptuous, ripped, squishy, stretch-marked, saggy…all of it. It’s time to embrace ourselves. I’ve received message after message from people thanking me for the video and telling me their story of being bullied because of being thin, being overweight, being muscled. It’s saddening and maddening. It’s a battle I’ll fight for anyone and everyone who isn’t yet ready to fight for themselves.

Now, creating a video is all well and good but we need to do more. So, along with the videos, Hot Mama has created an 8-week Screw Skinny Strength & Empower Program.

What is that? Good question. The Strength & Empower Program is an in-person class offered by Hot Mama’s Franchise Owners. Each week you will learn a new way to workout that will leave you feeling strong and empowered. How? Education, baby. If you know why you’re working out a certain way, it helps you on your health and fitness journey. So yes, each week you’ll get a Hot Mama butt kick like only we do.

But, that’s just the Strength and fitness part of the program. What about the empower part? Well, it’s time for you to start looking within yourself. It’s time for you to start saying the words “I’m beautiful. I’m strong. I’m capable”. So, every week you’re going to be given homework to do. Some homework will be hard and will make you really look within yourself to find the words of gratitude and self-love. Other weeks you’ll soar through the homework and scream from the rooftop (literally) how amazing you are.

The body awareness and self-love homework you’ll receive is the integral part of our Strength & Empower Program. We will set goals, we will make you look in the mirror and say positive words, we will break down the barriers of body-loathing and challenge you to accept you for you. We will celebrate others. Our Strength & Empower Program is not just another fitness class. It’s a fitness class that is going to push you physically and mentally. It’s time to figure out how to love your body and celebrate it. It’s not about just saying the words “I love my body”, it’s about believing them, owning them and celebrating them.

And how else would we end an 8-week journey that will build your strength, endurance, power and love of your body but with a Screw Skinny Scale Bash Celebration! Oh yeah we are. At the end of the 8-weeks we are organizing a Scale Bashing party! We’ll provide the sledgehammer and the safety goggles…you provide the scale to bash. Why? Because it feels DAMN GOOD to smash the scale. It feels amazing when you are no longer tied to defining your self-worth by numbers on that damn scale. And there is no better feeling than taking a sledgehammer to something that used to have some serious power over you. See ya later, scale. BAM!

REGISTER today at your local franchise. Space is limited, so connect with your local Main Mama and SIGN UP to be a part of this! You’ll receive the strength, support and love of your fellow Hot Mamas in your own FB Group. You’ll be inspired, empowered and loved. Oh…and we’ll make you sweat. Oh yes we will.

Have no fear, if there’s no franchise near you, we’re working on an online version for you. But…that won’t be released for a few months. So, you’ll need to hang tight on that.

Alright, Mamas. Join me, won’t you? Let’s take our power back. Let’s love our bodies. Let’s not be defined by numbers on a scale. Let’s get rid of aiming for skinny…join me…help me spread the word that we all need to #SCREWSKINNY.

Change Your Life With Hot Mama’s Nutrition Program: Body Smarts

December 22, 2016 By Lindsay Gee

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it over and over and over again until I’m blue in the face:

Stop dieting. Start educating. Learn.

LEARN how to nourish your body.

original-bodysmarts_slider-1

Alright, first thing’s first: What is Body Smarts?

Body Smarts is a program I came up with after my first year of working on my Hot Mama business. We were focused heavily on the fitness aspect of healthy, active living by providing safe and effective classes Mamas could bring their entire family to. But, I kept getting asked, “what diet should I be on?”. I would subsequently hang my head, sigh and softly say “why don’t you just eat well and feed your body the way it deserves to be fed?”.

And the answer would almost always be “I don’t know how”, or “what does that even mean?”.

A-HA! Okay then. I can work with that! Body Smarts came was born from my desire to help women stop dieting and actually learn how to feed themselves (and their families) in a healthy, nutritious way. I wanted women to stop searching for magic pills, wraps, cleanses, etc. and really buckle down and learn what, when, where, why and how to nourish themselves.

Now, my Ph.D. is in Exercise Physiology and my nutrition background is minimal. Being a firm believer in education, I knew I was stepping outside my scope of knowledge and I refuse to pretend to know something I definitely do not. So, I to a woman already coming to Hot Mama classes who was a Registered Dietitian. Not a Nutritionist, not a weekend-warrior, an educated-super-smarty-pants-amazingly-awesome Mama to help me. I told her my idea for a new nutrition program I wanted to implement and she said: “No, no…that won’t work…how about we do it like this…”. From there she and I worked together to write, create, develop and implement our 12-week fitness and nutrition program we eventually called Body Smarts.

We’ve been running Body Smarts through Hot Mama for about three years now and feedback is phenomenal. Although the program is not designed as a weight loss program, we’ve seen transformation after transformation. We’ve recently tweaked the program yet again (we stay very current) and it just gets better and better. No diets, no pills…just women learning and experiencing what their body is supposed to feel like when it’s active and nourished properly.

Weight lost. Inches lost. Bodies transformed. Energy found. Now that…that’s Body Smarts.

Here are a few testimonials from women who have taken the Body Smarts program:

heatherjohansenThroughout the 12 weeks, I gained awareness of optimal foods but I also learned to cut myself some slack and just relax a little bit around food. Instead of labeling foods as “good” and “bad”, just see it as nourishment. When you choose to nourish your body with the foods it needs to perform, your need to consume “treats” and “bad food” decreases! We’ve heard the phrase “honor your body” before and that’s what Body Smarts allowed me to do. Honour my body with nutrient dense food for fuel, healthy and longevity but to also let go of the guilt associated with less optimal foods can still be consumed for pure enjoyment. Food is supposed to be fun! Body Smarts takes the burden out of designing a healthy diet and gives you the tools to use for the rest of your life.

– Heather Johansen, Franchise Owner, Hot Mama to 1 daughter (2 years old)

krisderuiter1Body Smarts has been a life changer for me. As someone who struggles with lifelong depression and
anxiety, I had found myself this year at my ultimate highest weight to date. More than the day I delivered my little boy. So I joined Body Smarts with the intention of weight loss. I did experience weight loss and inches lost (about 15+ lbs and 10+ inches) but that is not even the great part. With the healthy eating habits, the increased physical activity, the support from our instructor and the great network of ladies I found myself feeling better. There are no words I can find to describe the change. But around the 6-week mark, I started to notice that the telltale signs of my depression that I had been feeling for my entire life were starting to lift. I was excited to start each new day, I had more energy and was more engaged in my life. The “heavy jacket” I felt I was wearing daily (the depression feeling) was gone. And still, is gone. This is a feeling I have never felt before. Happy. How amazing!

– Kris de Ruiter, Hot Mama to 1 son (5 years old)

kendralongI have celiac disease and as such was extremely hesitant to take the program but Amanda convinced me it was at least worth a try and I am so glad I tried! The best part is that they don’t tell you what to eat and you don’t have to eat food you don’t like just because it’s healthy. There are challenges and some weeks are more difficult than others but you are part of a team and they are there to help you through it. I was breastfeeding through about half of the course and there are special rules that take that into account!!! It was easy to cook BS friendly meals for my family (a 5 and 3-year-old included) and my husband actually loved the program as well. He’s following the rules and everything! To be honest I don’t think we will go back to how we were eating before (even though we were really doing a great job) because I figured out how to improve our family eating habits for the better and it just works for us. I’m so thankful that I enrolled in this class.

– Kendra Long, Hot Mama to 3 kiddos (5 years, 3 years and 9 months old)

staceywilliams1I lost 16 pounds and 15 inches in 90 days. But what’s more? I completely changed my mindset in regards to health and nutrition. My focus shifted from what the number on the scale said to “What feats
am I capable of today?” I wake up every morning excited to start my day. My head feels clearer, I am happier, more energetic (I DRASTICALLY improved my running time, can lift and squat way more weight and managed to do unassisted pull-ups!!!), and the head/stomach aches have practically disappeared. I am more confident in myself which has made me a better mom/wife/person.”Losing weight” was a great side effect to the program but the best results are the ones you cannot see in a before & after picture: gaining confidence, knowledge, strength and FEELING awesome. Most importantly? Finally loving my body for all it is capable of.

– Stacey Williams, Hot Mama to 2 kiddos (11 & 6 years old)

deannefairfieldI know this isn’t about losing weight but I do want to say what drew me to the program (and I hate to even call it a program!) was that I could eat and eat all the food groups as I’m tired of restrictive trends. I really did want to learn how to eat well and kick old habits! I feel strong after Body Smarts. I did not knowingly feel ‘unwell’ before I started but now I realize how great I feel eating well and that encourages me every day! This is a long term lifestyle change that I have made and that I am committing to. I have more energy for parenting and I’m more likely to hop on that toboggan with my girls. I spend less time worrying what to wear because everything in my closet fits and jeans are actually comfortable. I have an awareness and knowledge about ingredients and actual healthy cooking that I never had before. The only exclusions are my choices if I want to make them. I had no idea the impact Body Smarts would have on me and my overall mental and physical health when I signed up. I recognize myself again and as one friend noted…that smile! I’m so happy!

– Deanne Fairfield, Hot Mama to 3 kiddos (5-year-old & 3-year-old twins!)

20 lbs and a ton of inches lost in 12 weeks. I discovered new food, and I found cooking and planning healthy meals and snacks was not that hard. I was eating and not starving and bingeing, and my energy level came up making those long sleepless nights easier to manage. The biggest thing that happened was I found a confidence in myself I never had before. I was taking selfies with my kids and wear clothes from my closet that haven’t seen the light of day since my wedding 10 years ago. I even tried on a dress modeled it for friends and strangers at a clothing party, something I wouldn’t have done even in my teenage years. I can’t say enough about body smarts. No gimmicks, no diets, no magic pills or expensive shakes just healthy, wholesome foods and the tools and support to make the change.

– Candace Nicholson-Wilson, Hot Mama to 2 kiddos (8 years old and 9 months old)

See? Body Smarts…who knew nutrition education could change your life so thoroughly? Me. I did. YAY! And now we have a bunch of franchise owners who also know how to implement the program and take their Hot Mama community through the 12-weeks of awesome.

It’s time to break the dieting cycle and really educate yourself on food. Once you know the basics, you know them for life. It’s not a diet and it is definitely not a fad. It’s a way of living that can positively change your life (and your family’s lives). You’ll have more energy. You’ll feel better. You’ll have more confident. You will glow.

I’ve seen it. Mama after Mama. The confidence that comes from a well-nourished body and soul is amazing.

Body Smarts is nutrition and fitness education. But it’s also support from an incredible group of women. You’re not alone in the process because yes, some weeks are grueling and change is hard, so you need the support of strong like-minded women around you. We have weekly meetings, a support group on Facebook, recipes, encouragement and a whole lot of love and laughter. The power of the group is amazing and I hope you’ll grab your courage and join us. We can, absolutely, change your life with Body Smarts.

I encourage you to try out our 12-week program. We have classes in-person at most of our Hot Mama locations. If you don’t have a Hot Mama location near you, we offer the course online. Our next course is starting the week of January 23rd. So, connect with your local franchise owner OR connect with me! I can hook you up!

4 Strategies to Help You Cope When Everything Goes Wrong

December 14, 2016 By Lindsay Gee

It’s going to happen. Like it or not things are going to go wrong in your life. It could be a minor thing like spilling coffee on your pants. It could be a major thing like illness or an accident. Or it could be a bunch of minor things that create a major thing. And some days, some months, some years it seems like absolutely everything is going wrong in your life and nothing is going right.

We all have moments when we look to the sky and quietly whisper “Seriously? This too?”. Moments when you think you can’t handle one more thing and you’ll actually question your ability to withstand the pressure of one more weight added your shoulders. Moments when you think “if one more thing goes wrong, I’m pretty sure, no I’m certain, my head will explode”.

CB063014

I’m happy to report that no, in fact, your head won’t explode and there are numerous strategies you can use to help you slow down, reflect and get through times when you feel like everything is going wrong.

  1. Prioritize your tasks.
Usually, when you feel like everything is going wrong it’s a very busy time in your life. You’ll find yourself with a task list of a bajillion (it’s a word) things to do and when we have so much to do, we move quickly. Unfortunately, it’s usually when we’re moving too quickly that more mistakes happen and more things go wrong. So first, slow down and breathe. Take time to reflect on all the things/tasks/demands you need to get done and prioritize that list.If it’s a bad day, prioritize your day. A bad month? Look at what needs to get done over the next month and set goals you want to achieve within the next 30 days. Bad year? Same deal. List everything that’s gone wrong and figure out how to help yourself make them go right. Prioritize that list and focus on the top three tasks. Really, really be aware of what’s most important to you to “fix” and solve the major issues going on in your life.
  2. Reach out. We’re all so connected now through social media, the internet and all of our devices. But, when’s the last time you’ve actually connected with your friends and family members? When’s the last time you connected with that long-time friend you never have 5 minutes to chat with? When things go wrong, it’s time to get off your devices and reach out for human contact. We live in a busy, busy world but don’t forget that there is still a lot of love out there. I bet there is someone in your life who would love to help you get back on your feet.Don’t be shy about asking for help. It could be a simple request for an afternoon playdate so you can get some errands done in peace. Or, it could be a larger favor like a weekend alone to reflect, prioritize and figure some things out on your own.Whatever you need, reach out and ask for it. Your friends and family want you to feel good. They want you to feel loved, cherished and taken care of. But, if you’re constantly putting on a brave face and saying “it’s okay, I’m okay, I’m good”, they’re going to believe you (until things really go wrong and they need to come pick you up off the floor…trust me on this one). So, reach out. And hey…there’s really nothing as therapeutic as a really great Girls’ Night surrounded by the incredible women in your life. Laughter truly is the best medicine.
  3. Practice gratitude. When things are going sideways on you, the last thing you’re going to want to do is be grateful. However, this is probably the best time for you to stop, reflect on your life and remember what you have to be grateful for. You can start with the “little” things like hot coffee, a beating heart, food in the fridge, your children. As your start listing off the “little” things they’ll become less little.Sure, your kid was a nutjob and made you late. But, you have a child who loves you like crazy. Be grateful for that. Your job is demanding and your boss is a tyrant? You have a paycheck coming in and a way to help support your family. Everyone is sick in your household…for the third time in a week? Be thankful for medicine and your strong arms to hold the ones you love as they get well. Roof is leaking, food’s gone bad, car broke down and your dog ran away (insert Blake Shelton song)? You have a home, a car and your loyal dog will come back because he loves you and you have his favorite bed and stuffie.

Gratitude. It’s a powerful, powerful tool. Trust me. I challenge you to write down three things that you’re grateful for every morning and every night before you go to bed. And just watch. Watch the power of gratitude affect your life and welcome the positivity back into your heart. 5-minute-journal-1024x683

  4. Workout. Well, if you know me at all, you knew this would be on the list. The power of moving your body, of exercise, is incredible. So when things go wrong, go workout. Practice yoga, find a group fitness class you love, go throw some weights around, sweat yourself silly on your treadmill. Whatever you love to do to get active, go do it.During those moments of “Really universe, really?!” it’s time to get your sweat on.

Let your body take care of you. Go. Sweat. The endorphins and other hormones released, the mental focus and the overall well-being that exercise can bring into your life will help you reframe your thoughts and come up with a plan to tackle what needs to be tackled. The power of moving your body is incredible. Let your body help fuel and inspire your mind. There is nothing more therapeutic than a really good sweat sesh. So go lace up your sneakers, tie your hair up in that crazy pineapple you’ve been sporting and get moving. Your body, your mind and your spirit will thank you.

Things are going to wrong in your life. All the time. But, how you cope and react to those events is completely up to you. You get to decide what you want to put your energy into (for the most part). So, take control and try the above 4 strategies when you get overwhelmed with it all. Sometimes it’ll work like a hot damn and other times you’ll comment below about how ridiculous these strategies are. And, that’s okay! Some day it’ll work. Some days it won’t. But…don’t you dare give up. Don’t you dare lessen who you are and what you’re doing because you’re feeling beat up.

Remember, you’re amazing and you have amazing things to do in this world. Trust yourself, be grateful for all you have and get to work! You have an incredible life to lead. So go live it! Not every day is going to be a bad day. In fact, you’re going to have some pretty amazing days ahead of you. So focus there. Focus on the good.
